How to Get Your Life Together: 10 Tips & Tricks

Every Sunday I try to set good intentions. I try to prep out what my lunch is going to be for work, what I going to wear every morning, and what I need to get done for my job, the blog and my youtube. But these past few weeks I have fallen short on my goals. I know this, you know this, we all know this. I haven’t posted, I’ve hit snooze one too many times, been late more times then I would like to be and my diet has gone out the window. My life was falling apart at the seams.

Even at the beginning of this month, I told myself “this is the month, you are going to get in such a good routine.” I was pumping myself up and yet I was still failing miserably the first days in.

While it is extremely easy for me to continue down this path, I know I need to change. I know 6 months from now, 6 weeks from now and 6 hours from now I will be thanking myself for getting my life together again.

The key is to getting your life back on track and together again is not waiting for a Monday or the weekend or a new month to start. But buckling down on a random Wednesday night and get your life back together again.

So here’s how I planning on getting my life back together again:

#1 Drink More Water

Water is this magical thing, it helps with your diet, your skin, your sleep and your energy levels. And yet I am never able to get enough of it into my system. There have been one too many days these last few weeks that I go the entire day without filling my cup up once. And I feel it, I like to think it doesn’t impact me, but I see the difference in my days.

Drinking enough water through the day means I am not left feeling like a sack of potatoes by the end of the day. Usually sets me down the path of doing at least one productive thing in the evening ie, my least productive time.

Honestly, if I don’t do anything for the entire day I should at least be able to cross off drinking 2L of water off on my to-do list.

#2 Not Hitting Snooze

Hitting snooze is why I run late almost every morning, why I  wake up extra tired and why I always have a rough start to my day. I never used to be a snoozer, I used to get up with my alarm and be a morning person. Because my mama always taught me that hitting snooze just makes it worst. And I couldn’t agree more.

Part of the reason I like to hit snooze is that I give myself time to do it. like yes it would be nice to wake up at 7:00 am but if I get up 7:40 am I still have enough time to do everything I need to do. So what do I do, I set my alarm for 7:00 am and snooze all the way up until 7:40 and I wake up miserable. So now I am going to set it for 7:30 and give myself a few minutes to wake up.

#3 Hitting the Gym in the AM

Recently I read a post by Mary over at The Financial Diet all about 10 Things To Do This Morning To Have a Better Day and her point about the gym really resonated with me. I will never be a Gym / Physical activity kind of person. I don’t think I will ever like the process of going to the gym or being at the gym.  The only thing I do like about the gym is the after gym feeling but not usually enough to go in the first place.

Anyways, Mary talked about how she goes to the gym first thing in the morning. Because it’s always going to suck, but at least you got it out of the way in the morning and did something with your day. AKA hitting the gym in the morning gets me back on track cause it lets me feel like I at the very least did something with my morning.

#4 Eliminating Access Bad Foods

I don’t think I will ever be in a place in my life that I could genuinely advocate getting rid of all “bad” foods. I can, however, advocate eliminating the access. Eliminating the access to me means only having 4 Cadbury Creme MINI eggs instead of 8. This tactic is also known as “everything in moderation.

But as most of us, if I eat too many bad foods I start feeling bad mentally and physically and this really throws me off track, because once I start, I spiral. So to get my life back in order, I get back in control and limit the access of terrible foods I am consuming.

#5 Focusing on Only 3 To-Do’s a Day

I am a to-do writer, but not always a to-do doer. Meaning I can write endless to-do lists, feel overwhelmed and not do any of it. So when I know I need to get out of my slumps, I try to focus on 3 main items a day. I try to start small, build up good habits so I am setting myself up for a better day tomorrow.

#6 Buying Groceries

Nothing makes me feel like a better adult than having food in my fridge and a meal plan for lunch (at least) in place. Buying groceries means, I eat better, spend less money and waste less time debating make to eat. Overall it’s probably the most adult thing I do when it comes to getting my life together again.

#7 Binging on Youtube and Netflix on the Treadmill

I can sit and watch 20 YT videos and 5-10 hours of Netflix easily on any given day. I just turn it on and forget about my life issues.

So when it comes to needing to be productive, I try to save the stuff I want to watch for the treadmill. That way I am excited to do my cardio. I now have a reason to get up earlier each morning and still get to binge all while being semi-productive.

#8 Picking Out My outfit the Night Before

If I think I look frumpy and not put together, I feel frumpy and not put together. Therefore picking my outfit out the night before really helps me set the tone of my day.

I work in a casual office so I don’t dress up. Most of the time I am wearing a t-shirt and jeans but to me, there is me in a cute t-shirt and jeans which make me feel effortlessly cool. And then there’s me in a frumpy t-shirt and jeans which make me feel like I just rolled out of bed.

#9 Sleeping Before Midnight

This is another adulting thing, The latest I can get up on a given weekday is 7:30 am so sleeping before midnight means I get more than the recommended minimal 7 hours of sleep. And the fastest way for me to getting my life together is for me to be alert, awake and aware.

#10 Treating Myself

Falling off and staying off the wagon is easy. It’s easy to sit in front of the TV all night, eat pizza and avoid drinking water. It’s easy to stay in bed an extra 30 mins every day. It’s easy to avoid “extra” work aka my side hustle (this blog and my YT). So I reward and treat myself for the days that I do well. Whether it a trip to my favorite (more expensive) cafe or a cute top because I brought lunch all week long but this human is easily conditioned :D.

& that’s it, those are the things I do to get my life together again. That’s what I have been doing to get my life back in line. If you are reading this, you are reading my promise to bring you guys at least 2 blog post every week, one on travel (Tuesday’s), one on life (Friday’s). So stay tuned!
